Geology of Point Reyes Shorelines
Discover the interesting geology and dynamic shorelines at Chimney Rock, Point Reyes Beach, and Drakes Estero. Learn about coastal processes and how bedrock geology, waves and tides shape different seascapes and environments. Along the Chimney Rock trail, observe waves crashing against the western granitic headlands, but refracting or bending into Drakes Bay. At Point Reyes Beach, learn about a high wave-energy shoreline, longshore transport of sand, rip currents, and sand dunes. In the afternoon, hike on a ridge along the Bull Point trail as the tide retreats and reveals extensive low-energy mudflats in Drakes Estero. We will also discuss sea level changes associated with glacial cycles and climate change. Also open to youth (age 15-17) with parent attendance.
